Quick answer

The Armenia Temporary Residence Permit (sole-proprietor / remote-worker route) lets remote workers stay in Armenia for 1 year, using a savings balance of about 1,000,000 AMD (≈ $2,730) rather than a fixed monthly income requirement.

Who can get the Armenia nomad visa

There is no profession list, no degree requirement, and — under the rules in force through mid-2026 — no income threshold. You qualify by registering as a Private Entrepreneur (a sole proprietor) and applying for residence on the grounds of running business activity in Armenia. Working remotely for foreign clients or an overseas employer while you sit in Armenia is legal and does not need a separate work permit. Armenian citizens obviously cannot apply for a foreigner's residence permit.

The catch is the reform. A rewrite of the Law on Foreigners, first slated for 1 August 2026 and then pushed to 1 November 2026, adds a genuine business test — turnover of AMD 1,000,000 in the 60 days before you apply, or an AMD 1,000,000 balance kept in the business account — plus presence rules that end the old "paper residency" model. If you apply after it lands, expect to show real economic activity.

  • Accepts: Remote employees, Freelancers, Business owners
  • Savings route: 1,000,000 AMD (≈ $2,730)
  • No health-insurance requirement
  • No criminal-record check
  • Age: 18+
  • Not open to citizens of Armenia

The income requirement in detail

Today the honest answer is that there is no income floor. The migration service does not ask for payslips or bank statements against a multiple of the minimum wage; the residence permit rests on your business registration, and you are expected to be self-supporting rather than to clear a set number. That is what makes Armenia one of the easiest routes on paper for someone with irregular freelance income.

The 2026 reform changes the shape of this. It introduces an AMD 1,000,000 test — met either by turnover in the 60 days before applying or by a balance held in your business account through the permit — which at current rates is a modest four-figure sum in dollars. It is not a monthly salary requirement so much as proof your sole proprietorship is actually trading. Because the figure and its start date come from law-firm readings of the draft rather than a published official schedule, we mark this country unverified until the rules are live.

How to apply for the Armenia nomad visa

Everything runs through the Migration and Citizenship Service, increasingly online, and you generally need to be in the country to do it. The usual sequence is: arrive visa-free, register your sole proprietorship with the tax authority, then book a residency appointment through the e-government portal — which typically requires a local mobile number. You file the passport, photos, business-registration proof, a local address, and a medical certificate showing no listed communicable diseases.

The decision comes from the government within a legal maximum of two months, and the reform promises a tighter 30-day, fully digital process. The state fee is AMD 105,000 for the one-year permit now, rising to AMD 150,000 under the new law, and becoming non-refundable if you are refused.

  1. 1Enter Armenia visa-free (most Western nationals get up to 180 days per year) or on an e-visa, and confirm you want the business-activity residence route rather than a work or family permit.
  2. 2Register as a Private Entrepreneur (sole proprietor) with the State Revenue Committee — this is the legal basis for the residence permit and takes a day or two.
  3. 3Gather your passport, passport photos, proof of the business registration, a local address, and a medical certificate confirming you carry no listed communicable diseases.
  4. 4Book an appointment and file the temporary-residence application with the Migration and Citizenship Service through its online portal, using a local phone number.
  5. 5Pay the state fee (AMD 105,000 for the one-year permit under current rules; the reform raises this to AMD 150,000) and wait for the decision, which is issued within about two months.
  6. 6Collect your residence card; after three years of held residency you can apply for citizenship, and Armenia permits dual nationality.

Documents you'll need

  • Valid passport with adequate remaining validity
  • Proof of Private Entrepreneur (sole-proprietor) registration in Armenia
  • Passport-style photographs to the migration service's specification
  • Evidence of a local address in Armenia
  • Medical certificate confirming no listed communicable diseases
  • Completed residence-permit application form filed through the online portal

Taxes on the Armenia nomad visa

Spend 183 days or less in a calendar year and Armenia does not treat you as a tax resident, so your foreign income stays outside its net. Cross 183 days and you become resident, with worldwide income taxed at a flat 20% personal rate. The sole-proprietor structure is the interesting part: your registered business is taxed on turnover under a turnover-tax or micro-business regime rather than at the personal rate, and the micro-business regime can reach 0% turnover tax up to AMD 24 million of annual turnover. That is a real planning tool, but the details depend on your activity code, so get local advice before you bank on a number.

This is general information, not tax advice. Your position depends on your home country and any tax treaty. See our guide to nomad visa taxes and confirm with a qualified adviser.

Bringing your family

Family members do not ride on a combined income figure, because the main route has no income figure to combine. A spouse and children are added through their own family-based residence permits tied to your status, each with its own paperwork. It works for families, but plan each person's application separately rather than expecting one household threshold.

How Armenia compares

Against its obvious neighbour, Georgia, Armenia trades convenience for a prize. Georgia lets many nationalities simply live there for a year visa-free and is lighter on formalities, but it does not hand you a fast citizenship clock. Armenia asks you to register a business and hold a card, and in return counts every year toward a passport you can apply for after three. Turkey and the UAE ask for real income; Armenia, for now, asks for almost none. If a second citizenship is the goal rather than a cheap base, Armenia is the standout in the region.

What applicants actually run into

The two things that trip people up are the local phone number for the portal booking and the medical certificate, which foreigners often skip and then have to arrange in-country. Register the sole proprietorship first: the residence application depends on it, and doing them in the wrong order wastes a trip. Budget for the two-month decision rather than the reform's promised 30 days until you see the new system actually running. And watch the reform closely if you value the low bar — from late 2026 an absence of more than 183 days a year, or a business that sits dormant for over 180 days, becomes grounds to revoke the permit, so the days when you could hold Armenian residency without ever visiting are ending.

Armenia digital nomad visa: FAQ

Does Armenia have a digital nomad visa in 2026?
No. Armenia has no bespoke digital nomad visa. Remote workers use a temporary residence permit granted on the basis of registering as a sole proprietor (Private Entrepreneur), which lets you live and work online legally for up to a year at a time, renewable.
How much income do you need for Armenian residency?
Under the rules in force through mid-2026, there is no income requirement — the permit rests on your business registration, not a salary threshold. A reform expected around November 2026 adds a test of AMD 1,000,000 in turnover or business-account balance.
How fast can you get Armenian citizenship as a nomad?
You can apply for citizenship after holding Armenian residency for three years. Armenia allows dual nationality and has historically not enforced a physical-presence minimum, though a 2026 reform introduces presence rules going forward.
Can I work remotely in Armenia on this residence permit?
Yes. Working online for foreign clients or an overseas employer while resident in Armenia is legal and does not require a separate work permit. The sole-proprietor registration is what gives you the residence status.
Will I pay tax in Armenia?
Only if you spend more than 183 days in a year, which makes you a tax resident liable on worldwide income at a flat 20%. Sole proprietors are usually taxed on business turnover instead, and the micro-business regime can be 0% up to AMD 24 million of turnover.
How much does the Armenian residence permit cost?
The state fee is AMD 105,000 for a one-year temporary permit under current rules, rising to AMD 150,000 under the 2026 reform. The permanent (five-year) permit costs AMD 140,000 now, moving to AMD 250,000.
What changes for Armenian residency in 2026?
A reform to the Law on Foreigners, postponed from August to around November 2026, ends paper residency: it adds an AMD 1,000,000 business turnover-or-balance test and can revoke permits for absence over 183 days a year or business inactivity over 180 days.
