El Salvador Digital Nomad Visa: Requirements, Income & How to Apply (2026)

It's open to remote employees, freelancers, and business owners whose income comes from outside El Salvador. You can't work for Salvadoran clients or sell into the local market on this visa — the foreign-source condition is what keeps your income tax-free. You'll need a valid passport, a clean criminal record from your recent countries of residence, and international health insurance.

There's no degree requirement and no profession list. Salvadoran citizens don't use it.

The reported floor is about $1,460 a month for a single applicant — roughly four times the national minimum wage of around $365 for commerce and services. Bring two or more family members and the bar rises to about $2,190 a month, close to six minimum salaries.

Because El Salvador uses the US dollar, these are literal dollar figures with no conversion, and they're effectively fixed rather than indexed, so they don't drift year to year the way peso- or euro-pegged thresholds do. A 2025 change lets many applicants use El Salvador's online eVisa system instead of only a consulate. The basic online government fee is around $100, with a faster express tier and higher consular fees depending on where you apply, plus a separate charge for the temporary residence permit once you arrive.

The eVisa portion can clear in a few business days, but the full digital nomad visa process — background check, insurance, residence permit — typically takes several weeks end to end.

El Salvador explicitly exempts nomad-visa holders' foreign income from local income tax, so your remote salary or freelance earnings aren't taxed here as long as they come from abroad. The trade-off is a newer program with less predictable administration than its established neighbours.

This is a young visa, so expect some inconsistency. Sources and even officials differ on whether you're issued the full two years up front or one year at a time toward the four-year maximum, so confirm the current practice when you apply rather than trusting an older guide. The insurance and criminal-record requirements are firm: get police checks from every country you've lived in over the past two years, and make sure the health policy covers your full stay.
