The permit is open to remote employees, the self-employed, freelancers, and business owners, provided the income is earned outside Belize; you cannot take up local employment while on it. The hard eligibility gate is nationality. Belize restricts the program to citizens or permanent residents of the European Union, the United Kingdom, the United States, or Canada, which rules out applicants from everywhere else regardless of income.

You prove the work with a job letter if you are employed, or business registration and a tax return if you work for yourself. No age rule is published for adult applicants; children travel as dependants and may enrol in Belizean schools.

The floor is USD 75,000 a year if you apply alone and USD 100,000 if you bring dependants. Belize states these figures in US dollars even though its own currency is the Belize dollar, which is pegged to the greenback at two to one, so the requirement does not move with exchange rates the way a peso- or lira-based threshold would. You back the number with a job letter or business tax return, a notarised bank reference, and a statement of account. The bar is the same whether you stay one month or the full six.

You apply through the Belize Immigration Department, submit the document set, and once approved pay the permit fee: USD 500 per adult and USD 200 per child. The department does not publish an official processing time; applicants generally report a few weeks. The permit is valid for six months from issue and, in the department's own words, "shall not be extended," so there is no renewal to file, and it cannot exceed six months in a calendar year.

There is no path from this permit into longer residence. If you want to stay in Belize beyond six months you switch to a different route, such as the Qualified Retired Persons program if you meet its terms, rather than renewing the nomad permit.

Belize taxes on a territorial basis, which means income earned outside the country is not taxed inside it. For a remote worker paid by a foreign employer or foreign clients, that is the practical draw. The relief is a feature of Belize's ordinary tax system, not a special exemption written into the nomad program, and a stay capped at six months keeps you comfortably under the 183-day mark that usually triggers tax residency. For a multi-year Caribbean base, Barbados is the better structure; Belize is for a fixed half-year.

The most common way to be turned away has nothing to do with income: it is nationality. Applicants outside the EU, UK, US, and Canada are ineligible, and the tourism-marketing pages downplay that, so people assemble a full file before discovering they do not qualify. After that, the document-freshness traps bite: the police record must be under six months old and the job letter under 30 days old at submission, and stale paperwork is a routine, avoidable rejection. Budget for the USD 500-per-adult fee landing after approval, and plan your exit before you arrive, because six months is a hard ceiling with no extension.
